SDS empower self directed learning to achieve 99% user engagement

As Scotland’s national skills body, Skills Development Scotland (SDS) aim to deliver the very best possible outcomes for Scotland’s people, businesses and economy by focusing on skills planning and development – building fairer and more diverse workplaces.

SDS have more than 1,600 colleagues working across the country in career centres, schools and partner locations throughout Scotland.

The Challenge

Previously for staff at SDS access to learning had been confusing; courses and resources were held in various different places – including seven different learning platforms! There was a need for a central learning repository, in alignment with SDS’s corporate vision.

Additionally, after engaging with individuals across the organisation, SDS determined the following key requirements for a new learning platform:

  • Performance management was essential, with a need for users to be able to track and manage their own Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Individual’s need to be able to easily focus on the goals they had achieved and see which skills could be further developed.
  • Individuals needed to be able to fully engage with their managers when it came to their learning and development. It wasn’t just enough for managers to be able to see the courses their team had completed – there needed to be two-way discussions, with the individual in the driving seat of the conversation.
  • Flexible and customisable reporting was essential for managers and for the organisation.

The Solution

SDS identified Totara Learn would be the ideal platform to help them achieve their goals and chose Platinum Partner Learning Pool* to help them deliver their vision.

It was felt the platform needed a clean design and easy-to-use navigation, with a seamless user journey. A new eLearning content library would also be introduced, so users could find and complete learning that was relevant to them, as well as use the system to book onto face-to-face workshops.

Learners are required to complete a certain level of compliance learning and CPD hours each year. A customised ‘dashboard’ allowed the learner to monitor their year’s progress in both these areas, and they could also add in additional learning, completed outside of the platform, to contribute toward their CPD hours.

Learning Pool* brought to life SDS’s vision of ‘My Contribution’ – an approach to performance management which puts the focus on the individual’s personal responsibility when it comes to their learning. Users can record their conversations with their managers, and My Contribution allows a two-way discussion to develop as learners’ aim to achieve their goals.

The Results

The ‘sds academy’ was launched in April 2017 and is the one-stop-shop for everything employees need to support their learning and development. The performance management functionality allows employees and their managers to have active discussion when it comes to their development. Additionally, the compliance dashboard allows employees to see what they are aiming for and what they need to do to meet their targets.

Just over six months after the site went live, SDS has already seen fantastic user engagement – with a massive 99% of their current workforce actively engaging with the system.  Nearly 4000 hours have been spent to date by learners completing their important compliance learning – but there’s been nearly as much engagement with optional learning, demonstrating how invested learners have become in their new learning academy.

“Colleagues drive our success, so we knew it was crucial that the SDS Academy supported their learning, development and growth. We wanted something was user-friendly with engaging, accessible learning options. Totara Learn not only met our needs, but gave us a platform that was completely learner-centric. In working collaboratively with Learning Pool* we delivered a solution that is line with our corporate vision and – because of the flexibility and adaptability the platform offers – we are able to support our colleagues to continually achieve excellence." – Stephen Findlay, Organisational Development and Transformation Manager
